Fred was born in Toronto, Ontario. He started playing Bridge at 18 and was immediately captivated by the game. He was part of the National teams that brought Canada on the podium of World events.

Bill Gates selected him as his personal Bridge coach.

Fred has always been into computer science. He started his BBO project in 2001 and this has probably been the best gift that the World Bridge community has received ever since. Besides Bridge playing, BBO allows billion people to watch the top level matches through the BBO Vugraph.

In 2005, Fred was named Personality of the Year by the International Bridge Press Association.

Gitelman is sometimes recognized for his creativity at the Bridge table. It was reported that in one tournament Fred discarded an Ace, as a signal to his partner to not lead that suit. His partner led the remaining logical suit which Gitelman, being void, ruffed.
